Better Blessing: Inherit The Earth

BETTER BLESSING: BLESSED ARE THE MEEK

Pastor Josh Weisbrod – February 14, 2021

SUMMARY:

KEY SCRIPTURE: Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Matthew 5:3 (Matthew 5:2-12 – The Beatitudes)

BLESSED ARE THE MEEK FOR THEIRS IS THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN

1.     What does it mean to be meek?

·       Being poor in spirit: humility for self / Being meek: informs how I treat others

·        “A true view of oneself, expressing itself in attitude and conduct with respect to others”

2.     To be meek is to be humble

·       You cannot be meek and proud at the same time. Pride will turn everything bitter.

·       There is a war inside of us—it is pride, born out of fear.

·       Prideful person – I have to get my seat at the table. Humble person – I am the least, and I am ok with that. Luke 14:7-11

3.     To be meek is to be gentle

·       Humility is the soil out of which gentleness grows.

·       When our heart is softened and lowly our actions will be gentle.

·       Matthew 11:28-30 – If Jesus is gentle and lowly, what should I be?

4.     To be meek is to be patient

·       When did mistakes stop being mistakes? Cancel culture = zero patience with people

·       We all get angry. Getting angry is not a sin, it is an emotion. It is what we do with anger that can be a sin. (Ephesians 4:6)

·       We need to be patient and not so easily offended. Proverbs 19:11

·       PRIDEFUL  INSECURE  OFFENDED

5.     To be meek is to forgive

·       Just because we choose to not be offended does not mean it still does not hurt. Jesus promised us that we will have trouble. We should not be surprised.

·       When we recognize the forgiveness we have received, we can respond with forgiveness.

6.     To be meek is to be content

·       We need to be truly grateful and be satisfied with what God provides.

·       Our greatest miracle can turn into grumbling. Can I be content in Christ alone—in the victory and in the struggle?

7.     Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth

·       Those who abide in me and reflect my character will remain because I remain forever. They will inherit my kingdom. – Jesus

·       Recognize the forgiveness God has given us – allow it to humble our heart – respond to others according to that humility

·       Mark 12:30-31 - Love God totally and love others.
